The Family Guy:
How Social Distancing has Affected My Family

I am Blessed to come from such a large family. My Grandmother Ellen Jones, who recently turned 103 years young, gave birth to 16 kids and currently has about 50 grands, 125 greats, 80 great greats and over half a dozen triple great grandkids. That’s over two-hundred and seventy something of us, give or take a few. Despite the size, we are a close knit clan. No matter how much we disagree, we use love and understanding as tools of diplomacy. Family is a huge part of who I am as an artist and also where I draw a lot of my comedy material. Even my stage name “Cuzzo” is slang for cousin.

It is impossible for people who thrive off being together to normalize isolation. Because of the pandemic, we had to cancel our family reunion- a four day event so big that we only do it every two years. Someone decided to host a zoom family reunion. The difference between that zoom meeting and an actual Jones Family Reunion is like the difference between a sugar free piece of candy and a trip to the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory – It ain’t the same thing!

On Dec 12th this year, we celebrated my grandmother’s 103rd birthday with a parade. Dozens of cars met at the church and drove by grandma’s house blowing horns and yelling well wishes as she waved to us from her socially distant throne in the front yard. It hurt me to not be able to get out and hug her but it felt good to see the smile on her face as we rode by.

I once read that strong families are needed to create strong communities and that strong communities are the backbone of a great nation. I am Blessed to come from a country full of families like mine; willing to make personal sacrifices for the greater good.  We are all hoping 2021 will be better than 2020, but no matter how dark things may seem- as long as we treat each other like family the future will always be bright.

Peace!!!

  1. I really enjoyed this post. That big family is what I have too but since I only “discovered” the family later, it feels like I’m an outsider watching the very same thing he depicted. Congrats to grandma’s 103rd!
